A bit about my approach to therapy
I use different modalities during therapy sessions, based on the client and their issues. I usually work in two levels, one being in the here-and-now, working with issues at present. Here it's usually talk therapy/counseling techniques. In the second level I work with the client a little more in depth, where we look into the past, the root cause of issues, coping patterns developed in early life and how they are playing out in the present, and so on.
What to expect in my first therapy session?
The first session is usually about rapport building, providing a safe space for the client to open up and share. Then discussing the issues, the client wants to work on. If there are too many issues, I help the client rank them and plan how to take them up one at a time, in subsequent sessions. Sometimes the first session is all about venting and catharsis and dealing with the actual problem. It is also a good place to sensitize the client about therapy and how it works and enquire about their expectations from therapy and what life changes they are planning to work on. But then again it depends on the client and their issues.
